1

On September 23 (Saturday), Green Balkans, Society “Nature Park Sakar” and Svilengrad History Museum are organizing a joint initiative to make the dolmen of Levka village more popular.
The organizers are planning to clear the area and to ameliorate the access to the dolmen, and in the same time to increase its popularity and to make it easily accessible to visitors and guests of the area. The experts from the museum will show the participants the ways of inscribing and studying of such things. This event is part of the marking of the Green Belt Day by Green Balkans.
The dolmens can be seen in Strandzha, Sakar, and Eastern Rhodopi in Bulgaria, as well as in Turkey, and Greece. The fact that the dolmens span in such a wide a territory is further proof of their wide use from the ancient inhabitants of these lands. At the same time these, emblematic for the Green Belt territories, cover preserved nature, biodiversity, culture and history. Many of these territories are part of the NATURA 2000 ecological network.
In the Levka village, Svilengrad municipality area, part of Sakar mountain there is one almost unknown dolmen. Some of the locals know where it is, but the tourists and guests of the area have no idea and will get lost in the difficult area. This is in large part because the area was in the so-called Iron Curtain of the not-so-distant past. These are border areas, where access was limited and this was the reason that many cultural and historical landmarks were uncovered. This is the reason, also, these territories to be part of the international initiative European Green Belt, part of which is also, the Balkan Green Belt.
The Balkan Green Belt is the southern part of the European Green Belt, running along 9 countries. The Levka village area is also a part of the Balkan green belt, which is the reason we chose this place to mark it here.
