Identification of Potential NATURA 2000 Areas in Turkey Meeting Took Place

Foundation “Nature Park Sakar” NGO took part from Bulgaria, together with DAYKO Wildlife Foundation from Turkey.

The event is a part of the partner project between the two NGO’s – Preparation and promotion of the process of development of European ecological network NATURA 2000 in Istranca Mountain, CB005.1.12.135, carried out for the Interreg Cross Border Cooperation Bulgaria – Turkey 2014-2020 Programme.

The expert meeting took part on the 25.10.2017 in Demirkoy town in the heart of Strandzha mountain in Turkey. The goal was to identify pilot areas in the region that conform to the NATURA 2000 Protected Area criteria. The Bulgarian experts were from the members of “Nature Park Sakar” and experts from Green Balkan, which have a profound experience in building up NATURA 2000 in Bulgaria. From the partner side, professors from Trakia University in Edirne took part in the meeting. As part of the work meeting several potential NATURA 2000 sites were identified, amongst which the area around “Ineada” National Park, surrounding lakes and sea side, longoze forests, the Dupnitsa cave, beech forests on the Strandzha mountain crests, etc. Representatives of the local authority also took part in the meting – Demirkoy’s head of municipality, Demirkoy’s operative headmaster of the forestry sector,as well as other local stakeholders.

The building up of the NATURA 2000 network in Bulgaria and the territorial coverage of the network in the country, and the diversity of protected areas represented in Bulgaria and Europe, was very interesting subject for the participants.
